Marc Maron Cries at SXSW Sharing How Sharon Stone Helped Him Channel His Grief Over Lynn Shelton Into His Acting

“I should have been dead at the end of that!”

Those were comedian Marc Maron’s first words following the premiere of the feature documentary about him, “Are We Good?,” at the SXSW Film & TV Festival on Tuesday. The film, directed by Steven Feinartz, covers the full breadth of Maron’s career, from his start in the 1980s as a cocaine-fueled acolyte of stand-up Sam Kinison through the rapid success of his comedy podcast “WTF.”

“I thought, it’s amazing this guy still alive,” Maron joked as he took to the stage of the ZACH Theater in Austin following the premiere. “Because usually that’s a movie about a guy that died already.”

Death was understandably on Maron’s mind: The majority of “Are We Good?” focuses on how he’s processed his grief after his girlfriend, filmmaker Lynn Shelton, died suddenly of an undiagnosed blood disease in May 2020. Picking up a year later, Feinartz shadows an often irascible Maron as he attempts to piece together a stand-up routine about Shelton’s death, leading up to his acclaimed 2023 HBO special “From Bleak to Dark” (which Feinartz also directed).

Maron could be a reluctant subject, at times berating Feinartz off camera for relentlessly filming him over multiple years. Mostly, though, he is as candid and self-revealing in “Are We Good?” as he is on “WTF” — a quality on ample display during the Q&A.

A woman in the audience who Maron introduced by saying she “knew Lynn” asked him, “What are things about the way Lynn led her life that continue to inspire you?”

“I’ll tell you a story that happened recently,” Maron said. “I don’t know if I can get through it without crying.”

Last fall, Maron said, he shot a film called “Memoriam” in which he plays an actor with a long, somewhat lackluster career who, after getting diagnosed with stage four colon cancer, becomes obsessed with getting into the Oscars In Memoriam montage. Sharon Stone plays Maron’s ex-wife, a far more famous and successful actor, and in their one big scene together, both characters wind up breaking down crying.

“Now, I’m not confident actor, and I’m dealing with Sharon Stone,” Maron said. “I get to set, and she’s full Norma Desmond. I mean, it’s in a mansion. She’s got a turban on. And I walk on the set, I’m like, ‘Oh, fuck, this is real.’ We do two takes, and I feel like she just handed me my ass. I go into my trailer doing like Leonardo DiCaprio in ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.’ I’m like, ‘What the fuck is happening? I can’t fucking do this!’”

Once he could pull himself together, Maron shared his anxiety with Stone, telling her that he’d probably need to use the menthol sticks that induce tears.

“She goes, ‘Whatever you’ve got to do. But I know what makes you cry.’ I said, ‘What, you’re talking about Lynn?’ And Sharon Stone says, ‘Yeah. Look, you just do the scene to Lynn, and I’ll make sure she’s here.’”

As the audience audibly sighed, Maron said, “Right?!”

It wasn’t thinking about the loss of Shelton, however, that Maron said ultimately helped him with the scene.

“What got me there was that, you know, Lynn always — she believed in me,” he continued, welling up with tears. “The idea that she would get so much joy and excitement out of whatever I was doing — that made me cry with Sharon Stone.”

In a more lighthearted exchange, when one man began his question by noting that he’d seen Maron do stand-up in a tiny club in Austin in 2011, the comedian immediately jumped in with a vivid recollection of that specific gig. One of the few people in the audience that night, Maron said, was Oscar-winning documentarian Barbara Kopple, who then hired Maron on the spot to play a soccer coach in a Sprint commercial she was directing the next day. When Kopple enlisted Maron to help her induce a range of emotional responses from the kids in the ad, Maron said to one of them, “Do you like ‘Harry Potter’? He dies in the next movie.”

“The crew wouldn’t even sit with me at lunch,” Maron said.

Eventually, he pivoted back to the audience member, who told him that Maron’s openness about his own grief helped the man process the death of his mother.

Maron smiled. “Well, you’re the guy I did it for.”

Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco taking wedding planning 'one day at a time'
Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco taking wedding planning 'one day at a time'
Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco are taking "one day at a time" with their wedding planning. The newly-engaged lovebirds aren't rushing into their big day, and 37-year-old musician joked his bride-to-be, 32, is constantly coming up with a whole new idea. He told Rolling Stone magazine in a joint interview: “I think every day she’s planned a new wedding in her head. “We’re very much ‘take it one day at a time’ type of people. We’re still not over this moment. "Literally, while you were talking, she was sitting there staring at her ring.” The 'Only Murders In The Building' actress pointed out that for now, they're focused on the upcoming release of their collaborative album 'I Said I Love You First'. She added: “Also, I genuinely feel like this is such a special time that we get to apply it to this album and really just pour our heart into it, and completely translate what we feel and bring it to the world. "That’s my main focus right now, at least.” In December last year, Selena revealed Benny had proposed using an oval-shaped ring with a large diamond. He popped the question during a picnic which featured Taco Bell, but he insisted there wasn't an "elaborate" meaning behind the fast food involvement, He explained: “There’s not this whole elaborate thing. I think we’re very lucky to be surrounded by such great people, and we’ve still just been enjoying so much. “It feels like we got engaged yesterday, but also feels like we got engaged 20 years ago. I’ve known her since she was 18, and so it’s like we got all that stuff out of the way. "By the time we’re dating, it’s like, whoa. My biggest regret is that we didn’t get to do this earlier, like we waited this long to be together. But I know it was perfect and it was right.”

Olivia Munn pays heartwarming tribute to late agent Tony Etz
Olivia Munn pays heartwarming tribute to late agent Tony Etz
Olivia Munn is heartbroken after the death of her literary agent Tony Etz. The 'Newsroom' star has paid tribute to her agent, who died on Monday (10.03.25) aged 64 after battling Chordoma, a rare form of bone cancer. She wrote on her Instagram Story: "This makes me incredibly sad. This is my literary agent who passed away from cancer yesterday; but that's not how he deserves to be remembered. "He should be remembered as one of the good guys in our business. They didn't get better and kinder than Tony. "Rest in love, my friend. My thoughts are with his sweet family." In a second post, Olivia - who previously battled breast cancer - simply added: "We all love you, Tony. F*** CANCER." Tony spent three decades at the Creative Artists Agency (CAA), with his career seeing him represent several directors, actors, producers and writers, while he was also involved in shows like 'Grey's Anatomy', 'House' and 'Jackass'. Almost two years ago, he requested to write his own obituary, and summed up his career in two lines. As quoted by Deadline, he said: "Over 30 years as a packaging agent, I was foundational in the sale of 'Jackass', 'House', 'Lost', 'Rescue Me', 'Big Little Lies', 'Jury Duty' and 'Tracker' and dozens of other shows. “And I have been a proud citizen of the best city state in the business.” He married fellow TV agent Nancy Etz in 1999 during her time at ICM, and she would join him at CAA seven years later, while they went onto have son Alex together. In a tribute, Peter Tolan - who co-created 'Rescue Me' and 'The Job' - hailed him as "deeply mourned" and "irreplaceable". He added: "He defended those of us who were fortunate enough to be his clients with a ferocity most of our own mothers would be unable to duplicate.” While longtime client Paul Attanasio said: "He had the sensitivity to understand what was unique to me (which I would constantly doubt) but then the breadth of vision to understand how that fit in the larger world (which I didn’t understand at all). "That was the secret ingredient in whatever I was able to accomplish in television. I couldn’t have done it without him.”

Charlie Sheen's daughter Sami 'bullied' for looking like her dad
Charlie Sheen's daughter Sami 'bullied' for looking like her dad
Charlie Sheen's daughter Sami Sheen was bullied for looking like her famous father. Sami, 20, has admitted the cruel taunts about her appearance from her school mates convinced her she needed to get a nose job and she's also had to deal with comparisons to her actress mother Denise Richards. Speaking to her mom in an episode of family reality show 'Denise Richards and Her Wild Things', Sami explained: "I had to deal with kids bullying me. "People would say I looked like my dad. I actually got a comment the other day of someone saying, ‘You’ll never be as pretty as your mom'." The episode showed Denise driving her daughter to a consultation with a doctor about her planned rhinoplasty prior to the surgery in August and Sami told her mother she had wanted the operation "for as long as [I] can remember", adding: "I have this freaking honker stuck to my face". Sami also pointed to her mom's face as the example of a "perfect" nose as she explained her hope for the surgery to the doctor. Later in the episode, Denise - who is mom to Sami as well as 19-year-old Lola with her ex-husband Charlie- became tearful as she talked about her daughter's desire to go under the knife. She said: "For my daughter to want to get her nose done, it made me so sad. I feel bad that she has to live up to my nose, or whatever, because I don’t want [my daughters] to feel they have to look a certain way ... "There were times I wanted to move the kids out of LA, and I couldn’t because of where I worked. And they had two parents in this business. I feel bad." However, in a confessional, Sami wondered if she would even be considering cosmetic surgery if she wasn't living the celebrity lifestyle in Los Angeles. She said: "I'm really trying to think if we lived in, like, Alabama and I worked a normal job and I wasn't on social media. I probably would still want a nose job."

Dwyane Wade feels 'strong and healthy' after cancer battle
Dwyane Wade feels 'strong and healthy' after cancer battle
Dwyane Wade feels "strong" and "healthy" after his battle with cancer. The 43-year-old former basketball star - who is married to actress Gabrielle Union - had a cancerous tumor removed from his kidney in December 2023 and he's now explained he's "free" of the disease almost two years after his shock diagnosis. During an appearance on 'Today with Jenna and Friends', he said: "It was cancer [but] it was only Stage 1. "Thank God that we caught it early. Now I’m back. I’m strong, I’m healthy. I feel great. I’m just a little more cautious ... "[I'm taking more time to] look around and really smell the moments in life [and] appreciate it all just a little bit more. I feel like one of the lucky ones. I’m cancer free." During the interview, Dwayne explained he initially saw a doctor as a precaution because both his father and grandfather had been diagnosed with prostate cancer - and he was blindsided by the results of the tests. He said: "I just started to be like, okay, well this is probably a part of my genetics and my history, let me go get checked out. When I turned 40, I went into the doctor and I was like: ‘Listen, I want to know everything.’ And in the midst of that, I was like: ‘Here are a few things that I’ve been feeling' ... "I got a call from my doctor and in the midst of that call, you could just hear her uncertainty. They thought they saw something on my kidney. They were like: ‘Well, we don’t know if it’s cancerous, but there’s something on there'." He went on to have surgery to remove the mass and Dwayne struggled with the idea of feeling "weak" - and he didn't want his wife to see him post-op. The former sports star said: "No one has ever really experienced me being weak. "I’ve always been the strong one, the most confident one, the world champion that has lifted the trophies over his head. That’s the image, but this was a moment where I knew I was going to be uncertain and a little weak ... "Once I came out of surgery, it was a pain that I had never felt before ... [I was] most afraid of being that vulnerable [in front of my wife}. "It sounds crazy because those are supposed to be the ones you want to be there in those moments of weakness ... but you don’t want them to see you in that space." It comes after Gabrielle previously admitted her husband's cancer journey had been a "challenge". Appearing on 'The View', the 'Bring It On' actress was admitted it took her "a while" to come to terms with his diagnosis, and her mind immediately went to the "absolute worse-case". She added: "You hear cancer [and] you're paralyzed because you think of the absolute worst-case scenario. "I've had so many friends who are cancer survivors. I didn't go there; I went to 'he's gone.' " She also revealed her husband decided not to share the diagnosis with the family for some time. She explained: "He didn't tell everybody. He didn't even tell our whole family. He really wanted this to be very under the radar. He didn't tell anyone."

Emma Bunton and Mel B 'reunited in South Korea'
Emma Bunton and Mel B reunited in November to take part in a reality TV show. The 49-year-old pop star and Mel secretly flew to Seoul, South Korea, in late 2024, when they sang alongside K-pop idols for a TV show. A source told The Sun newspaper: "A Spice Girls reunion is a way off. "So having Emma and Mel back on stage singing a Spice Girls song together might be the closest fans get to a comeback, even though it will be with K-pop stars rather than Geri Horner, Melanie C and Victoria Beckham. "They flew to South Korea at the end of last year and were on set for quite a few days as they battled it out with other pop veterans. "With them alone on board, it is a big show. But there’s also Boy George and loads of other chart-topping stars, which will be enough to encourage people to tune in." The reality show will air on Apple TV and will also feature the likes of Megan Thee Stallion and Psy, the 'Gangnam Style' singer. Meanwhile, Melanie recently revealed that she's ready to "start planning" a Spice Girls reunion. The 51-year-old singer would love to reunite with her bandmates to mark the 30th anniversary of 'Wannabe', the group's 1996 hit single. Melanie told Rebecca Judd On Apple Music 1: "There has to be something befitting of 30 years since ‘Wannabe’. "Once a Spice Girl, always a Spice Girl. We all feel like that, but we now are getting together because we know if we're going to do anything, we have to start planning things to get things right. "We have to start making the plans right now and putting them into action. So fingers crossed."
